Snoqualmie Pass, Part 1

Excursions to: trails and caches in the Cascades
What a Wonderful World!
On our way to a much longer hike, we stopped for a quick cache find. This is Pepper (Team Supergenius) and Michele (of LucyandRickie), standing in front of the sign marking the memorial woods.
Asahel Curtis was a renowned photographer. This plaque is located in a memorial woods, with a nearby picnic area. The cache is hidden nearby.
Pepper and Michele discuss hiding techniques.
Mission 9: Tunnel of Light
Our next stop was the trailhead that would get us through the Snoqualmie Tunnel and beyond.
The tunnel is more than 2 miles long, beneath a mountain. We needed flashlights and jackets for this one!
Michele paused in front of the tunnel. We were looking for a good spot to place a cache near the entrance.
Pepper heads toward the opening. This is an old avalanche tunnel for trains (built in the early 1800s, and used for a century). Now it is part of an extensive trail system for hikers and bikers.
The tunnel is gated shut during the winter.
Michele and Pepper place the cache and get coordinates.
After 2 miles, we finally approach the other side. The opening is just behind Michele's head. We could see the spot of light during our entire trip through the tunnel -- just kept getting bigger and bigger.
Near the end we heard the roar of rushing water. We exited the tunnel to see this immediately outside.
There are some nice picnic tables and even an outhouse. We stopped for a quick lunch.
A bit further up the trail was the 2nd cache find of the day. Michele pulled, and the box just kept coming and coming...
This is certainly one of the largest cache containers I've ever seen! It was part of Project APE, a geocaching tie-in from the Planet of the Apes movie. Evidently a movie prop was presented for the cache container...in this case, it was a large torch (thus the need for a tall container).
